Lanyu, better known as Orchid Island, sits in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southeastern Taiwan. Approaching the island by boat or plane, verdant hills and dark gray rock formations come into view. This island is home to the indigenous Yami or Tao tribe. Tao refers to human in their native language. The Yami have a rich marine culture, many traditions of which have been preserved.
