Romanticism originated in the second half of the 18th century in Western Europe where it increased in its popularity during the industrial revolution. It can be described as a revolt to aristocratic social and political norms during times of Western philosophy and cultural life: the Age of Enlightenment
Expressionism artists explored new techniques such as intense colors, drawing distortions, and bold use of paint surface. This would create incredibly emotionally charged works that came from reaction and emotion rather than a subject.
Impressionism was commonly associated with independent Paris based artists during the 19th century. This type of work included visual paint brush strokes, a focus on light and how it changed throughout a picture, "typical" subject matter. It focused heavily on the human perception and experience and was soon followed by other types of Impressionist Arts, such as music and literature.
Abstract is a painting style rather than a classification or a period of art as those listed above. Keep in mind that this amazing form of art has no set rules, the picture may or may not look like something, there are no rules. You can observe the many different elements of the painting. This may include the form, the thickness of the paint, the textures of the paint, lines, arches, the colors, etc. Do the colors blend, do they clash, do they complement one another? How does the painting make you feel - does it create a sense of joy, anger, depression, anxiety?
There are two different types of Abstract Art:
Hard Abstract - can be described as being based on geometric shapes
Soft Abstract - can be described as having no basis
When painting on canvas, specifically pertaining to Abstract type art, there are many different tools the artist may choose. In many cases it will end up being what you least expect. Newspapers, squeegees, sponges, spoons, the list can go on and on. The idea behind using such tools is easy. Abstract Art is Abstract. There are no lines to stay within. No one to tell you that you did it wrong. It merely shows what the artist felt and wants to convey through a selection of colors that best describe the emotions felt. Another trademark of many abstract artists is manipulating the medium used prior to it drying completely. For example, scratching through the surface of one color to achieve a specific look or feel.
Historically, there have been many well known abstract artists. A few well recognizable examples are:
Jackson Pollock is best known for "action painting" by literally throwing, dripping, smearing, spattering paint onto the canvas.
Wassily Kandinsky is credited as having created the first abstract watercolor
Piet Mondrian was the inspiration behind Yves Saint Laurent's 1965 Fall Mondrian
Much of their art is still highly regarded today.
Abstract art is timeless. Some of it captures the raw emotions of the artist and some of it displays the well thought out geometric patterns of ones mind. Once you know what goes into creating an abstract art paining, something you may have once thought was so disorganized and so easy turns into an amazing snapshot of a view through the 3rd eye of the artist; the state of enlightenment as per the the artist.
