This is a video that of the Washburn Model 1915 Parlor guitar listed on eBay scheduled to close on 2/28/2010. Please forgive my playing, I am not trying to win any contests, just show you generally how this guitar sounds. I will take this video off line after the guitar sells. While much of this is me simply plunking away, the melody that might seem familiar is a Woodie Guthrie song called "Vigilante Man" The first time I heard this was as performed by the band "Nazareth". They of course covered it much better than I. You should be able to see this in HQ by clicking on that button. I haven't used any fancy microphones for this, just the microphone built into my Canon digital camera. Until the guitar is put into proper shape and has new strings, you probably would not hear much of an improvement with fancy microphones. The overall character of the instrument is what we want to share here.

  • what do you think of getting a parlor guitar for my first guitar?

  • @letsshoutletsdance Great Idea! They are good "couch" guitars. The physical size is nice. There are some good modern ones if you do not want to have to deal with the "issues" of a vintage instrument. Getting started, you need to make sure WHATEVER you buy it is set up by a good luthier. Even some very expensive guitars come from the factory with terrible "action", where the strings are so high off the fretboard you really hurt your fingers.

  • Can you tell me what the model number is on this guitar? I have a 116 that looks just like this and am trying to put an actual date on the manufacture. It is in really rough shape. It came out of an attic at and estate sale. I have my friend who is a luthier fixing it for me.

  • @anneharpen I looked at my old eBay ad and see that at the time I never did pinpoint the date of manufacture. I might suggest taking some good photos and sending them to Elderly Instruments. I see in my ad that I found on the label inside that this guitar was a Model 1915, Style 1118.

  • how long did it take you to get good at slide?

  • @aragon667 Thanks! At least somebody thinks I'm good! :) I am not so sure myself. I think if you want to be good at blues or slide you need to break up with a significant other so what's in your gut can come out your fingers. I suppose it's better than drowning your sorrows in cheap liquor! Seriously, I played at least 10 years before I purposely spent a lot of time with a slide. Some folks get started on slide right away. It is probably more a matter of hours played then years played

  • @aragon667 Play 500 hours of slide and I am SURE you will be good. I must be at about 200.
