Part 3: church systems (practical theology); conflicts, ambiguities, and demonic risks/trends in the churches as vehicles of the divine presence.
faith = the state of being grasped by the power of an ultimate concern

I think he uses the word "cult" in a technical sense and not in its popular usage.

The churches are always ambiguous and always a paradox, and therefore always carry the risks of "demonic trends". Both because of the churches and in spite of the churches, the divine presence can have transforming power.

Note that Tillich said "faith" and "belief" are different. For more on this view of his, I recommend his wonderful little book Dynamics of Faith, probably available at your public library, and often found by people to be worth reading more than once.

This is from a tape recording. I do not know who the interviewer is.

  • If you want to promote wisdom and discernment (which I assume to be desirable in any field of endeavour), why not argue with what Tillich is saying in the clip instead of venting your emotions? Try to replace your personal dislike with some professional disagreement.

  • "The most evil consequence of the non-distinction between faith and belief is that faith is distorted into belief in doctrine and authority." -Paul Tillich
