Visitors take aim and discover how light can be translated into sound with this fun spying device. Here, a laser beam is be aimed at a "window" mounted at the far end of the exhibit. A digital repeater and speaker mounted behind the window play a conversation unheard by the visitor at floor level. The vibrations of the window created by the sound waves emanating from the speaker cause a slight modulation in the light beam. These modulations are read by a receiver on the "spy end" of the device and translated into sound, mirroring what is being said behind the window. By adjusting two knobs, the visitor can fine-tune the laser beam and hit the receiver just right to hear the sounds behind the window. The exhibit has been designed with two sets of headphones so the visitor can share the experience with a friend.
