Lynyrd Skynyrd is performing "Gimme Three Steps" live in Knebworth Fair Hertfordshire, England. The date is August 21th 1977.

Personally this is one of my favourite Skynyrd tune. Love the text and I'm happy for Ronne Van Zant that he managed to flee!

Ronnie Van Zant is singing about when he was facing trouble in the bar called "The Little Brown Jug" (the Jug). He was dancing (cutting a rug) with Linda Lu, when her boyfriend showed up. And he wasn't that kind to Ronnie...

The text is based on a true story that Ronnie was experienced in the middle of the 60s.

Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins wrote the song the same night as Ronnie was facing trouble in the bar.

Listen to the text and just enjoy the song (:

Gimme Three Steps is covered in Lynyrd Skynyrds' first album - (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd).

Gimme Three Steps live song text;

I was cutting the rug
Down at a place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lu
When in walked a man
With a gun in his hand
Looking for you know who.
He said, "Hey there fellow,
With the hair colored yellow,
Watcha tryin' to prove?
'Cause that's my woman there
And I'm a man who cares
So this might be all for you."
I said "excuse me"

I was scared and fearing for my life.
Shakin' like a leaf on a tree.
'Cause he was lean, mean,
Big and bad, Lord,
Pointin' that gun at me.
Ohh "Wait a minute, mister,
I didn't even kiss her.
Don't want no trouble with you.
And I know you don't owe me
But I wish you would let me
Ask one favor from you."

"Won't you give me three steps,
Gimme three steps mister,
Gimme three steps towards the door?
Gimme three steps
Gimme three steps mister,
And you'll never see me no more."

Well the crowd cleared away
And I began to pray
And the water fell on the floor.
And I'm telling you son,
Well, it ain't no fun
Staring straight down a forty-four.
Well he turned and screamed at Linda Lu
And that's the break I was looking for.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away
I was headed out towards the door.

"Won't you give me three steps,
Gimme three steps mister,
Gimme three steps towards the door?
Gimme three steps
Gimme three steps mister,
And you'll never see me no more."
For sure
