The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club - Series 2 DVD is out now.

"It's a good job he was nice to me on the way up because I've just met him on the way down..."

The legendary Bernard Manning comperes while fellow stand-up veteran Colin Crompton is 'Mr Chairman' at the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club -- the friendliest working men's club in the North.

Amid the boozing, bingo and committee announcements, the show features rising stars and evergreen entertainers, contemporary acts and international stars -- and the occasional musical oddity.

For the first time on home-video format, this release presents the complete second series, in which Roy Orbison, P.J. Proby, Marty Wilde, Russ Conway, Matt Monro, and dancer, choreographer and UFO star Peter Gordeno can be found rubbing shoulders with the Amazing Bavarian Stompers and some 'exotic' dancers!

Although the 'club' was a humorously authentic studio mock-up, this forgotten treasure of '70s light entertainment programming -- building upon the highly successful live-audience format of The Comedians -- brought the quickfire comedy, musical variety and convivial atmosphere of a typical Clubland concert night to a national audience. Providing a showcase for several future household names, Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club proved a ratings winner between 1974 and 1977; this second series was first screened in 1974 and the set also includes that year's New Year's Special.

I worked as a barmaid in a working men's club, and believe me, we had some really terrible acts on a Saturday night. We had one man who dressed as a Black and White Minstrel in the 80s! The club had a stage the size of a handkerchief and a tiny dressing room with no hot water.

You couldn't make up the Wheeltappers because you didn't have to, it was all real.

I wonder if Mike Myers saw this show and based his Austin Powers appearance on the little guy ?......or maybe it is Mike Myers.

This is what comedy and comedians is all about. The crap we have today is nowhere near as good or funny.
