Bhindranwale was a member of Punjab Congress and was supported by Indira to supress Longowal (an akali) and his Anandpur Resolution. Bhindranwale first heard the word Khalistan from Jagjit Chauhan a congressi agent who coined this word after his meeting with Indira . In response Bhindranwale said if khalistan is offered to us we would accept it. Since there was media ban in Punjab, Congress started the propeganda on Doordarshan that Bhindranwale is a terrorist and is demanding khalistan.
