The modernization of the pilot house is something that all long haul boats have on the inland water ways. That provides a margin of security for the pilot and takes a lot of guess work out of navigating the rivers. The old steering wheel depended on a system of cables which ran the full length of the boat and were not trustworthy since they were know to break while the boat was underway causing a hair raising experience for the crew.
I think they ruined her when they added in all them computer things they should have kept her oringal wheel but no mater what I still love her it is possile that the delta queen might come back to the rivers,,,a new spokeswoman is speaking for her,,,something about Betty Blake,,,lets hope the delta queen can and will return to the rivers in 2011,,,
I grew up in Cincinnati and finally got to work on the Delta Queen summer before my 1st year of college (1977). I am still proud to say that I was a lowly dishwasher on the DQ. Thanks for the great videos of parts of the boat I was never allowed to see. My berth was 20 inches below the dance floor. I only slept because I was exhausted.
Beautiful boat but very ugly pilot house without her wheel.

I remember seeing a picture of Captain Mary Green at the wheel of this boat when she was very up in years. No wheel anymore? Am I missing something?
