Here is my first attempt at a rolamite, to be used as a compononent of a linear slide. My goal is a low friction non-magnetic linear slide to use in the magnet motor.

This version is using blue-temper spring steel so it is magnetic. I'm looking for some beryllium copper strip to replace the steel.

It works ok, the resistance to movement is surprisingly small through about 2/3 of the travel. The other 1/3 fights back a little for some reason. I suspect either the walls of the channel are not exactly parallel, or there is some kink in the metal strip.

It works well enough though to go forward with this idea.

Simple DIY low friciton!

  • The rotary version is a "ScrollerWheel"

  • Thanks Erik, yes I have enjoyed your video.

  • I wouldn't bother with expensive non-magnetic spring steels. Go and cut a strip of rubber from a car tube. That should work just as good and at no expense. Simpler is better!

  • Thanks for the idea! The material needs to be very thin, flexible, but with no stretching. I will watch out for plastic like this, thanks.

  • I discovered this concept yeterday and immediately made one. A fascinatingly simple device that i may be able to employ in my university project. I have to investigat the feasabillity of using it over very long runs.

  • I would be interested in seeing what you have done or will do!

  • Hello, maybe you could clear a point for me. It is said that rolamites present very little friction, but as I see another bearing required, such as the rod/wheel interface.

So, how is this problem avoided in industrial applications of the mechanism?

  • i think it would be better if you explane what it is ?means absolutly nothink to me

  • Why does it spring back to center?

  • Google Rolamite. He didn't invent this, it was invented in the 1960s. He's just trying to use it.

  • Can I steal your idea and make millions without giving you royalties?

  • thats a great idea you came up with there, great job, are you going to try to use that with your other idea (autogenic device) ?

  • It would be nice if more people could "think outside the box" and enjoy the implications of virtually frictionless "scrolling mechancs".
