James Weinberg, instructor at Belmont Academy, performing an arrangement of Nie Er's Song of the Volunteers from 1932 in honor of 3 Chinese piano students moving away from Nashville. Clip was made by a student's father in the audience following our Spring 2007 Recital.

  • Thanks for your nice performance !

  • You are most welcome!

  • You know what? I think that this is a different, if not better interpretation of our national anthem. If the regular version is a call to arms to repel the invaders, this version by Mr. Weinberg sounded like a mother telling her children tearfully about her harrowing experiences at the hands of the invaders and telling them to defend her in the future. Very unique perspective. Well done

  • Thank you (Xie xie) Chenster. You got what I was intending to do.

  • Diu Lee--I'm sorry you didn't like my version. I listened to many recordings and studied the words before making my own arrangement. I am aware of the historical meaning of the anthem, and believe it is best represented by a military band. But my idea was to present a more expressive (less march-like) version for the piano. I was sincere and apologize to you and any people from Zhong Guo who were offended.

  • I disagree that it sounded like a funeral song although it is true he misinterpreted how this should be played. I think it can happen to anyone especially when playing foreign anthems.
