Yes an additional module will be necessary, but it seems to me that there should be some default handling for this. It doesn't need to be WYSIWYG, it could be some sort of input filter like [media:12345]
I'm curious to see how this works when you have sub directories and many files.
Very interesting and well needed. I wonder though, what is the process for inlining media in content? There are few instances where you want an "attachment", what you really want is your media in the middle of your content.
What versions of Media module are you using? Drupal 7 version?
