History of the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. Wage cuts set off the strike among the mostly unorganized railroad workers. The strike soon spread to other workers. Fighting broke out in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Martinsburg & Danville. President Rutherford B. Hayes--renowned for ending federal protection for former slaves--used federal troops to put down the strike. Workers learned from this strike that organization was necessary to win.
