Gabor Szabo, violinist

Hungarian-born Gabor Szabo is considered one of the most exciting young violinists of his generation.

Born in 1974 in Budapest, Gabor started his violin studies at the age of seven.

He is the winner of numerous national and international violin competitions:
First Prize Budapest National Violin Competition, First Prize Zatureczky National Violin Competition, First Prize International Chamber Music Competition in the string trio category (USA). He won 2nd Prize and the Special Prize for the best Paganini Caprice at the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition (Hungary) and 3rd Prize at the Hubay National Violin Competition.

Since 1993 Szabo has been a permanent soloist and recording artist of the Hungarian National Radio and has made more than 70 live recordings. His recitals are regularly broadcast by European television companies.

Gabor Szabo has performed as soloist with many renowned orchestras such as the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Dohnanyi Symphony Orchestra,Camerata Budapest Chamber Orchestra, the Hungarian Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, the Meadows Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Galicia, with such a conductors as Andras Ligeti, Janos Kovacs, Eduard Schmieder, Dmitri Loos, Gabor Hollerung, Adam Medveczky, Valeria Csanyi, Tamas Benedek and Zsolt Hamar, among others.

In 1996 he performed by special invitation for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

He is regularly invited to international music festivals in Los Angeles by Young Artists International (YAI) and was also invited to the International Music Festival in Finland (Maante) as a soloist and chamber musician. In 2003 he was invited to the Saint Petersburg Music Festival as a soloist. He also frequently performs at music festivals in Spain.

Gabor Szabo is known for his wide-ranging repertoire, extending from Vivaldi to contemporary composers. The renowned Spanish composer José Luis Greco recently dedicated a work to him scheduled for premiere in Budapest in 2011.

As a recitalist Gabor Szabo has performed in more than fifteen European countries, as well as the United States and South America.
His duo partner is the Italian pianist and chamber musician, Domenico Codispoti (www.domenicocodispoti.com).

Gabor Szabo was admitted to the Bela Bartok Conservatory of Music at age 12 under the guidance of Jozsef Modrian (former concertmaster of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra) and later Laszlo Kote (violin soloist and former concertmaster of the Budapest State Opera). After receiving his soloist diploma from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, where he studied with Laszlo Kote and Eszter Perenyi (violin soloist and Head of the String Department of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music), Szabo moved to the United States, with the recommendation of Boris Kushnir, for further studies with Dr.Eduard Schmieder (former Oistrakh student and a successor of Jascha Heifetz at UCLA) Head of the String Department at the Meadows School of Music and Arts, SMU in Dallas. His chamber music teachers include Sandor Devich (former violinist of the legendary Bartok Quartet) and the cellist Nathaniel Rosen (winner of the International Tchaikovski Competition in Moscow).

Gabor Szabo has also taken master classes with violinists such as Ruggiero Ricci, Zakhar Bron, Lorand Fenyves, Stefan Ruha, Denes Kovacs, Eduard Schmieder and Michael Frischenschlager, among others.

Szabo held the position of Concertmaster in the Budapest Symphony Orchestra (MAV) and soon after he was appointed Concertmaster of the Camerata Budapest Chamber Orchestra. From 1998-99 he held that position in the Opera Teatro Municipal in Sao Paulo, Brazil and he was principal violinist in the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia in La Coruna, Spain.

Szabo frequently cooperates with orchestras as concertmaster in many European countries. As a leader he has worked with many renowned conductors such as Jean Jacques Kantorow, Vasily Petrenko, Rumon Gamba, Adam Medveczky, John Nelson, Andras Ligeti, Victor Pablo Perez, Carlo Rizzi, Jesus Lopez Cobos, George Pehlivanian, Dmitry Loos and Jakub Hrusa, among others.

His future engagements as a soloist will lead him to concert halls in Spain, Italy, Hungary and the USA.

Since 2008 Gabor Szabo resides in Madrid, Spain.
