Penumbra wasn't that scary but try the game amnesia, well maybe its me but i don't get scared at all with anything but anyway I got to admit amnesia (the same creators from penumbra, frictional games) ; is more atmospherical thrilling than any game i've played, it could make you get pretty jumpy :D Try it it's a good game and it makes you think a lot and that's what I love about it (just like penumbra). Also Dead Space is hands down one of the best horror franchise ever!

*Spoilers* The marker keeps the Necromorph hive dormant to contain them and causes hallucinations that convince people to protect it or leave it be so the Necromorphs don't come. It doesn't work. Thats my understanding at least.

Wait a min.... the game said that this system was of limits, and that they knew about this artifact origionally before anyone even went to the planet. Plus the church has been doing things with dead bodies. This is a deep story line.

This Marker, according to the game, is a man made artifact build from the original marker who is a black one. In others words, a copy from a Alien artifact found on earth 2 century ago.
