A beautiful tree used for generations by Indiginous Americans,it is our native 'lemonaide',very good haveing a tart lemon flavor, full of vit.C and color, the trees leaves are a medicine,it also makes a natural black ink, The buck deer love to rub and decorate they're antlers with the sap. An important pollination food from the flowers,a food that is very important to year round resident birds and those returning for spring as it is among the last to give food into early spring.
A very important part of permaculture to give our helpers in perpituity a complete environment to benifit many.

  • lots of lovely sumac trees around here, too. years ago we'd make gallons and gallons of tea from the flowers, and from wild mint and sassafras root, maple sweetened, to share out at anti nuke rallies. once at a rally for shutting down shoreham nuke plant on long island vendors who were selling soda pop for 3 bucks a can got mad at us for offering free refreshments, so we charged 1 hug or 1 handshake per cup.
