In this video I take a look at the LXDE release candidate of Linux Mint 11, which is good for bringing back life to your old machines.

  • Please, please, please pronounce Linux properly. I'm sure you wouldn't like someone mispronouncing your name.

  • I used to pronounce it the proper way, though two years of my TAFE instructor pronouncing it differently, subconsciously changed the way that I pronounce it. A lot of my videos have one or the other pronunciation.

  • In catfish you searched for "Home" in the catfish folder.

The dropdown will allow you to search (user)

  • @DougWardBlammo I noticed that after I finished the video, lol.

  • Mark, I was wondering if you have a Facebook profile, because I seem to can't find you. Thanks.

  • @xskydevilx I have a very locked down Facebook profile, I mainly use Twitter.

  • @sdperez79 Thanks for your kind comment. :)

  • Great video, thanks! It really makes me want to try this out. I am currently running Linux Mint 11 and I mostly like the experience, but this looks more light weight. Keep up the good work!

  • Running the 32-bit ISO in VMWare Player as a LiveCD on a lowly single core Athlon64 3200+ nForce 4 Ultra board with 1GB of RAM (the VM is using 512MB) and it's smooth as silk without slowing WinXP down at all. Heck, I'm typing this from the Firefox on the LiveCD. I could probably get away with installing a 64-bit distro of this on such old hardware without knocking my swap into next month. Wow! After the mess Ubuntu 11.10 became with Unity/Gnome3, this is a very welcome surprise ...

  • Nobody is called Linux. It's a word now in such wide use that the original inspiration for the word is hardly relevant to the pronunciation any more. Lye-Nux or Linn-Ux are both "correct". Such is the way languages work. Usage is everything.

  • Isn't a debian/arch linux a better distribution for older computers?

  • Another error - Every time Firefox was opened the Mint Welcome Screen would turn totally white when I returned to the desktop, meaning that their was nothing viewable on its menu (same welcome menu you find in your video). Unfortunately LXDE doesn't appear to run any faster than Windows XP on my parents old Dell Dimension 4550 with 512 MB of Ram.

  • I installed LXDE as a dual boot option on one of my parents' computers since it was choking on online JAVA games. The experience was ruined when I soon discovered that I couldn't double-click to open anything on the desktop. I tried adjusting the mouse settings but selecting "apply" didn't actually save any settings. The settings for the mouse weren't indicative of double-click speed adjustments anyway. Also, no busy hourglass cursor or anything to indicate the system is loading an application
