Touhou 06 The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
東方紅魔郷
Reimu B Extra Stage
Previous part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9Q7t24u5Ks
Next part (failure, unpleasant, comedic reasons): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh45BKMJg1I

Unlike other Extra stage bosses, almost all of Flandre's non-spellcard patterns are fairly easy to handle.

Of course, the same does not necessarily apply to her spellcards, the first of which is all about traps. I have to admit that I do not have this one figured out entirely, given the fact the fact it's supposed to be a trap it should be possible to somehow avoid danger. Somehow I just wind up getting caught and sometimes I don't, quite interesting, too bad I got caught this time.

The second spellcard is quite impressive, only be careful when rushing from the right to the left.

The third one is my favourite spellcard, I think. There are four Flandres, the real one and three fakes. Shooting down a fake first is the safest option since the barrage of four Flandre's can get ugly. Also, they can cover each other, making it risky to go for the real one first.

The fourth spellcard strongly depends on where she moves, I wonder if you could use the sides.

The fifth spellcard is not a maze, it's a death trap, simple as that. I can't do it the obvious way to save my life, so I just stay in front of her and bring her down as soon as possible.

For the sixth one, try to tell the bullets of different velocities and heights apart and predict the openings, some spots will be unexpectedly tight, others will be the opposite. Also, don't move up too far, some bullets spawn dangerously close to the bottom of the screen.

For the seventh one, aim for the bottom on the right-hand side. The bomb I used here was to ensure a 100% victory, this time around the path to the left was fairly clear.

The eighth spellcard is one I saw in StB, though this one works differently. The direction you have to go in is fairly obvious at most times, the hard part is navigating through the bullets.

The ninth spellcard is time-based, it's all about survival. I think it might be the most exciting of all penultimate Extra boss spellcards I have seen so far, the noises combined with the music and, of course, the excitement in general, make for some sweaty palms.
The first part is easy, just keep in mind where the lights spawn. The patterns after that just repeat a few times, increasing in speed. Having them memorized is crucial.

The entire life I had left for the last spellcard, as usual, happened to be the exact amount I needed. Why in tarnation do all my Extra stage clears always end in such an exciting way? My heart will give in to the pressure the next time this happens, seriously.
The tenth and last spellcard is, without a doubt, the most difficult one. Not only does it last fairly long, but with all the pressure the calm decisions it requires become fairly difficult.
The basic strategy is simple. As you can see, the bullets will reach you at different times. Predicting when and where is the key. Not doing that equals death. At first it's fairly easy and mistakes can be covered up, but when the speed increases the difference between those who know how to handle it and those who don't becomes painfully obvious. It's easy to tell that I had a lot of problems here, I'm really not used to this kind of spellcard. Nonetheless, I managed to prevail in the end, again with 0 bombs and 0 lives to spare.

Looking back at it, I think this might have been the most exciting stage so far. I played it in an extremely safe way, but given the results I think it was worth it. Half the difficulty in this game is deciding when to use a bomb, most of the time you just cannot afford to go for the bomb at too late a time.
As far as style is concerned, this was not quite as exciting as I'd like it to be, I certainly wanted to capture more spellcards.

Oh, well, the next time I'll be attempting this stage will probably be for scoring reasons, I'll make up for it at that time! Until then, I'll have to improve more, though, this just makes me want to keep going and going.

Also, witnessing failure right as the last spellcard is about to end is something I witnessed for the first time here - I certainly hope it's the last time!

With this stage, I managed to clear everything I wanted to clear before Double Spoiler is released. Next project, aside from Double Spoiler, will be Mountain of Faith Hard mode/Extra stage regardless of that, I hope you enjoyed this video and will watch my future videos, too, thank you for watching!

Thanks, I'm still rather weak, though. There's always room for improvements!

  • Only extra boss that I can't get to >__>

You do know you're a god for beating this, right?

  • @Hawelo92

Nope, I also wonder what exactly that is or if it would be considered a bug.

In the end, whether it could be considered bug-using or not would depend on whether the bullets become faster as time passes or as Flandre loses health,, since the former would allow for an easier win by shooting her before she starts with the spellcard.

  • Hey, I noticed something! You don't take on her last spellcard at full HP, you take a bit of it before she starts it! Is there a non-spell card there I'm not seeing?

    At 6:15

I don't know, had some trouble uploading everything, maybe it's related to that?

Who knows, I'm just glad that this part is over, thanks for your feedback!

And yep, that failure was bad, it was not just like taking the carrot from the stick, it was more like crushing it. I could laugh about it, but luckily it only took me an hour after that to beat the stage, would not have wanted to go to bed with that being my last attempt.

  • Why would YouTube publish it without processing it yet?

Anyway, great run ;_; That failure video must've made you rage quite a bit.
