This shows a video transfer in progress from an Ampex 5100 machine to Umatic and domestic VHS formats. The original tape records the closing down of the last UK operater telephone exchange at Abingdon Oxfordshire. This operating machine belongs to friend Martin but I also have 5 of these industrial format machines

  • Which model U-Matic machine are you using here?

  • I remember reading somewhere that Ampex made a consumer VTR/TV combo in the early 60's that was supposed to be sold in the Neiman-Marcus catalog.

  • Thanks for this fantastic clip of a video reel transfer to umatic and VHS,wow. Amazing Ampex 5100 machine, is a beaut. I actually have two Ampex video reels type 161-60, these are both in great shape, and came from a university av department and are supposed to contain some early tv video recording experiments students were comitting with the then new hardware.NTSC transfer needed !

Many thanks again for the great clips, always a pleasure to watch the material you upload.

    Cheers.
