Tried So Hard, I Found You, If I Hang Around all which date from 1966-67 and from his first solo record made a few months after he left the Byrds. If I Hang Around dates from sessions that came after the first album and recorded with Chip Douglas whom he briefly formed Gene Clark and The Group with. Images of Michelle Phillips pop up because around this time he was involved a brief affair with her.

  • "Tried So Hard" and "I Found You" are from "Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers" LP. That is one record I could listen to over and over again and never tire of it. It was his greatest album until "No Other" came along. This was my first exposure to "If I Hang Around". What a beautiful song. Clark was so great and so missed. I still listen to his later tunes and can't help but think how they would have sounded had the original Byrds recorded them. Thanks for posting these.

  • Your welcome. Imagine a great album such as Younger Than Yesterday, and what if Clark had contributed tracks to that album? What If? It boggles the mind! I'm glad I have introduced If I Hang Around to you and the previous post. That's what this is all about! For the People!

  • I didn't know "If I Hang Around". It's beautiful. Thank you for posting a tribute to my favourite American singer-songwriter.

  • Thank you! If I Hang Around is found on the Byrd Parts Vol. 2 CD which compiles Byrds related rarities.

  • One hundred years from now the music of today will be largely forgotten while the songs of Gene Clark will continue to be performed, studied and enjoyed.

  • Different class

  • definitely sounds like clarence on guitar huh

  • It was Michelle Phillips' affair with Gene Clark that got her kicked out of the Mamas and the Papas for a couple of months in the summer of 1966.

  • @tom89074 Michelle Phillips = Gene had a fling with her and this song is likely about her....Probably the first two are about her...

  • Who's the Girl in the Blue Sweater?

  • I sure do miss Gene Clark... and for that matter Clarence White and Gram Parsons. What if those 3 were all still here...

  • If I Hang Around could have been huge - I can imagine if the Byrds had done it....

    What a beautiful song!

  • @Aviv52 - If you're still looking for it, search "The World Turns All Around Her." There's a version posted by byrdsmusic, I think it is. Also, there's an outtakes version posted. Great song!

  • I wish there was a You tube version of The World Turns Around Her.

  • Byrds were never quite the same without Gene. Set You Free This Time was the tune that really got me. . .
