The Baker group http://bakergroup.wustl.edu/ uses adaptive finite element methods to solve problems in continuum electrostatics http://apbs.sf.net/ and diffusion. This animation shows the adaptive refinement of a two-dimensional finite element mesh to resolve the surface of a four atom cluster. The calculation was performed using the FEtk software http://fetk.org developed by Michael Holst and co-workers.
