to anwser your question without insults. Beowulf realized it was all his fault because the dragon is not fully a dragon but a demon that is also his son (watch the movie and you'll see why) and when he hanged there in reach to the dragons heart he understood his only chance to stop it was to sacrefice himself. He was not afraid to do it either because that was his way to pay for his sins of selfish needs and saved his family. If he did not the dragon would burn them alive.
