On Friday I went to the Farmers Market in Richmond, California to videotape the live bird vendors in an effort to expose the cruel treatment of the chickens. The birds are stuffed in those yellow crates, usually about 9 birds per crate, and when they are purchased they are violently shoved into paper bags (2 per bag) which are then stapled shut locking the birds inside. This vendor sells crates of eggs as well as the birds themselves, which are typically used for food or for cockfighting.

Army of Compassion is working hard to end these practices. "Live animals are being sold at Farmers' Markets and shops, treated in ways that violate California's anti-cruelty laws, and are often in violation of health laws - yet law enforcement, politicians and judges have historically been reluctant to take action because of political pressure and other influences by people profiting from the markets." http://lgbtcompassion.org/livemarkets/livemarkets.htm

  • This is so disgraceful. This i why I'm glad I'm vegetarian going vegan. I just wanna cry!

  • I admire the way you pieced this together, and the live bird sale certainly is a nice twist to the topic of farmers market. I posted a clip called "allen street farmers market" and I hope you don't mind me mentioning it here. No one can find it so I'm self promoting it, and, watching other peoples clips. I see your clip has created some controversy, but that's OK. Your clip is entertaining, and people can find it. Again, thank you for letting me mention my little seen clip.

  • "pretty profitable" Yeah its called a living. You racist fools of course will approach the city governments to moralize a nonsense new age issue because your sensibilities are wounded. Between the styrofoam banning and the lawsuits against Chevron your intent is the forceful gentrification of Richmond, the chief weapon being destruction of peoples livelihood

  • Would you agree that causing unnecessary pain, suffering, and death to animals is wrong for reasons of pleasure and convenience?

  • If you put yourself in these chicken place and really feel how they feel, you would not support this type of cruelty! It's so sad to read the heartless comments from utube users. The world needs people with compassionate not selfish, cold-hearted, ignorance.

  • Those birds look big and healthy.... and in full feather. They have obviously been raised well. I would be honored to eat 1 or 2 of them.

  • Wow! You are not that informed are you? This is not cruel. These are food animals. They are not being treated wrong. They have a better path to my dinner table than the chickens in the grocery store.

People need to learn that food does not come from the grocery store. I raise chickens for both eggs and meat. They are great. YES I bag their heads and cut them off.

    Wake up! WE ARE OMNIVORES

  • They don't let themselves be bothered by the clueless white broad.

  • people are such hippocrate. unless ur a vegan then its acceptable. but factory do much worser . just selling them alive. what so cruel.

  • Thats alot of chickens and im hungry =) FYI Those chickens cant be used for cockfgihting they are for eatign so go suck a dick or shove a carrot up ur ass
