  • Years ago when touch changed from 7 to 6 a side and teams started defending using strong links and corners the scores in games skyrocketed....I am pretty sure if they went back to man on man marking in the 5 and left the middles to guts it out without any help the scores would be lower. At rep level any of these players can throw the big miss out pass to the wing which is why strong links defence does not work. NZ has to go back to middles on middles and if broken then it is stick or mirrors.

  • @Gay1Guy interesting insight! i was wondering why teams shut down so quickly i.e. why not wait a little longer to see if the man marking can recover and catch his man. also, an idea is to use what we term a 'roaming wing' i.e. wing positions themself between the link and wing, so if the ball goes long he can maybe recover and catch the wing, or if it goes shorter, the wing can step in and hit the link. anyway, interesting comments!

  • if shaun johnson and benji marshall played in this game, we wouldnt stand a chance,

  • @Kakutachi That is how it started - but it evolved into something way different. I was a rugby player who took up touch for a bit of summer exercise in 1982. Nowadays many touch players have never played rugby.

  • lol look at the amount of supporters and compare it to the amount that would be at the contact rugby world cup

  • that is a game for my sister

  • @Gay1Guy lol I didnt even know there was a modern way of defending. Its always been man on man defence for me. But then again, I only play for fun, never at ths level lol but still, i agree with u, man on man is the way to go in my opinion

  • @lf2bjl1 YES your roaming wing idea has a better chance of killing things if he is in between link and wing....but sadly all rep players are taught that the wing goes straight for the link...and to be fair the teams attacking have increased the gap between the link and the wing so that the defending wing pretty much has no chance to mark both players.

Personally I always believed the modern way of defending does not work. Go back to man on man I say.

  • mean level of touch.

  • wow. . .actually a bullshit game
