I have a similar vibe about this upcoming season as I did back in summer '05. The team is flying under the radar, much like that year, and not many folks expect them to compete for the Big 10. I just have a feeling the rollercoaster 7-6 season of last fall will pay dividends. An experienced group of WRs/defense, a more seasoned o-line (whether or not that means better run blocking is anyone's guess), and a promising RB in Silas Redd equates to what I believe will be a 9+ win season (or better).
@bokprop420 Newsome isn't really in the mix anymore, although he could be used in another position if he agrees to a position change. It'll be down to Bolden and McGloin but Jones might be in the mix as well, he showed promise last spring but was redshirted due to academic reasons.
@bokprop420 Not that I know of, he seems to be back to wanting to compete for the starting job. The thing that sucks is that it's impossible to tell who will be the starting QB.
@bokprop420 I don't know how that happened either, but hopefully 2011's tuneup games are back to where they were before 2007. If Penn State even struggles a little with Indiana State, I know it'll be a long season.
In retrospect, this may have been a decent win given that Penn State was one of the few teams to beat up on a traditional FCS powerhouse, despite the early adversity. Compare the 44-14 wipeout to the 42-37 UMass-Michigan game, or the 41-38 South Dakota upset of Minnesota (SDU wasn't even an FCS powerhouse), or how about James Madison 21-16 over the Hokies in Blacksburg. So maybe PSU's huge win represented one of the last bright moments of the twilight era of the tuneup game.
Sadly, I think the 44 seen against YSU will be the most points by PSU all year. Not that it'll be the only win, but a lot of wins will see scores between 20 and 35, although I think there will be one game where PSU scores 36-39, but it won't be Kent State, this is a young offense. I think by time it's time for the Big Ten schedule, we'll know just how good PSU is. But we don't know much yet, remember, Penn State allowed 16 first downs from Coastal Carolina in 2008 and turned out alright.
