Gyrocopter Autorotation

This is my SportCopter HKS powered gyrocopter performing a simple autorotation. The engine is at an idle. I have one hand on the stick and one hand holding the camera.

Hello.

Check out the rotaryforum and pra.org. These are the main two websites for gyronuts. My gyro cost about $20K. You can pick one up for considerably less. I chose the gyro because of how safe it is and how smoothly it flys. None of those dips like you have with fixed wing.

How has your HKS engine worked out for you? I assume it is the 700E. Does it provide adequate performance? I would much prefer a 4 stroke to a 2 stroke if the performance penalty isn't too great. Are you flying a Lighting or a Vortex?

The 700E is a little under powered. I feel that if makes only around 55 hp. Fantastic fuel mileage and very quiet. I can fly for three hours on a single tank! The angle of the engine on my Vortex I believe is also slowing it down some so I will be changing it this winter to sit flat. The HKS 700T is a nice engine but it costs over $14K as far as I know.

Yes, its FDK.

Weekdays in the fall are the best there.  Just avoid the gliders.

Given the performance, relative safety, and operating costs, this looks like it makes a lot more sense to me than the ultralight helicopters Ive been considering.

I definitely agree.

Gyros have much less complexity and are much cheaper to own. Helicopters are very cool, but they are also a lot of work, time, and money.

If I ever bought a helo kit it would be the eagle r&d kit. Very nice.

@gusolive75 They routinely show up on eBay. Bensens and Air Commands generally will fetch no more than 5K. Heck of a deal but you want the machine checked carefully by someone well versed in Gyros.
