Friedman says here something very wise: that if govt seeks to reduce inequality of opportunity it should do so by removing the barriers to free and fair flow of capital-ie should remove that which hinders capitalism, that which is mercantile. Positive intervention in economies to create artificial equality is such a stupid goal to seek, entailing such curtailments of liberty and creating such an expensive state, that I as a Briton apologise for this British simpleton who talks such shit to M. F.

Milton Friedman may your soul rest in eternal peace. I only wish there were more of you to go around.

oh, i agree . i think i very poorly stated my comment. what i meant was back then they were not as bad and now since they went towards a more socialist system, like peter wanted, they are in terrible shape because of the other factors you had mentioned. in no way did i mean to imply that low taxes are bad for an economy.

No worries. And I totally agree. There is something about socialism that entices its adherents to believe that higher taxes is both good and efficient for a society. Perhaps the value of creating equality over creating wealth is what drives their MO. Perhaps they don't understand that it takes the creation of wealth to build equality. What do you think?

well all one has to do is listen to milton freidman in any of his interviews in the past. there is no system yet discovered throughout history that brings more wealth to individuals than a capitalist system based on largely free trade. and nowhere on the planet in history has socialism ever worked! and this notion that there is some sort of utopian system that everyone will be wealthy and have everything from a collective socialist government is pure fantasy!

Yes, well, there are many people out there that live in a fantasy land. They tend to work in entertainment, journalism, academia, and politics. As Sowell might say, it's easy to live in a fantasy world when you have little price to pay for being wrong.

Indeed. It was Friedman that once said the following:
"1. Socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried;
2. Everyone knows this; and
3. Therefore, what we need is MORE socialism!"
