Media 7 -Series 5 Episode 7 Part 1

Evolution or revolution? That is the question as change is in the wind yet again at TVNZ. This time we are being promised a shake-up that will truly take news and current affairs into the 21st Century.

There are some job losses but TVNZ News Boss Anthony Flannery is upbeat about a new strategy that will see reporters going into the field better equipped to deliver stories to air faster and to service the growing range of platforms that carry news content.

There will be changes too inside the Television Centre with "centralized hubs" where coverage will be planned and stories will be processed and delivered to the growing number of different streams that carry daily news content.

Even areas that have been largely immune from major change like "Fair Go", "Sunday" and "20/20" will feel the winds of change as producers and reporters share facilities and become more personally involved in the hands-on production of their stories. Viewers are being promised a better, more immediate and relevant coverage of the local, national and world events that affect their lives. On Media7 this week Russell Brown discusses the big shake-up with Anthony Flannery and hears about his hopes for a better and brighter future.

We are also looking at the New Zealand International Film Festival which is running for the third year now without a major sponsor...that means that the Festival has to rely for about 90% of its funding from ticket sales. Despite this lack of sponsorship the playbill is in great shape with almost as many New Zealand films represented as US imports.

This week Festival Programme Director Bill Gosden and Film Critic Dominic Corry join Russell Brown to discuss the films and the developments that continue to make the cinema a vital part of our culture
