Dr. Doug McGuff explains the muscular systems involved in training the lower back. As over 75% of Americans will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives, knowing the muscles involved is crucial in developing a proper program to strength them.
Thank thank you for this video. I know now the reason for my lower back pain, from deadlifts ...pretty much took it to failure then deep inside felt a strain..knew I did damage but didn't know to what exactly ..

@Naturalhit Right now, I have pain in my lower back doing military press. I think the muscles involved has got to be spinalis thoracis or longissimus thoracis, or both? I suspect that it is my form, leaning way back when doing the military press. I put it on rest for now and stick with other alternatives (not that the other kind of seated presses are any safer, heh).

@Naturalhit @Naturalhit I think that beside the fact that you must practice perfect form is basic, but also the upward progression of weight should be done very cautiously, little by little.
I am really concerned when it comes to the lower, not to get hurt. I cannot imagine a workout without big compound lifts like the deadlift and the squat, since they are so much effective and are... fun.

The MedX restraint was not meant to to take out the superficial muscles as McGuff suggests. The restraint was designed to block pelvic rotation and thus contribution of the hip & thigh muscles. ALL of the paravertebral spinal extensors were meant to be activated & contribute to this multi-articulate musculoskeletal SYSTEM of support. As joint angles change, active insufficiency occurs in certain muscles as extension proceeds, and others take over. The MedX Medical Lumbar tracks this beautifully.

Thank you, Dr. McGuff. I stopped doing deadlifts over 10 years ago, because I suffered a serious lower back pain from it. Even though my form was textbook style. When I was training my clients back then they too were starting to feel some pain on their lower back. I had to stop them and cancell this particular exercise.
