i visited ecuador to dive wolf and darwin islands in the galapagos and to visit puerto lopez to dive with giant manta rays at isla de la plata.
i saw a lot more than i had bargained on.
the sale of shark & ray fins is illegal in ecuador, unless the animal was caught accidentally.
entire ecuadorian fishing fleets now "accidentally" target nothing but sharks and rays.
the fishermen receive $5 u.s. per fin.
these "accidental" catches are having a devastating effect on ecuador' thresher shark, hammerhead shark and mobula ray population.
will the giant manta ray be next?
I am so sorry you had to witness this. Sad that it even happens. But I am VERY glad that you made this video and are sharing it. It needs to be shared. Footage like this needs to make people mad and sick ... It takes video like this to get action to protect these wonderful creatures. Honestly, I do not know how you remained calm enough to film it. Thank you for posting this. I shared it on Facebook and on Twitter.

The fact that they take mantas too because they cant find enough sharks any more is even more sickening...

I also think that there is little that can be done. This is a man made problem. A problem of human destiny that is beyond human beings.

Whilst I do not approve of shark fishing at all, there are two sides to this story.
The good news is that the fishing of mobulids was outlawed in Ecuador in late September and I was on this same beach watching the new legislation being enforced. Before we are critical we must remember that shark fishing is legal in most countries and the EEA is responsible for the majority of shark fishing worldwide, so please help lobby some of the most powerful countries via the Shark Trust to change things.

This is terrible.. Horrific and too bad no one does anything for this to end.. We are destroying everything with no remorse, no feelings towards it. Why don't they do this to human? because we talk and can communicate with each other, but animals cannot. These people do not understand what they are doing. that is what is terrible, no education, no knowledge, they do not even know they can become extinct at some point, they just do it for money, to survive but someone needs to teach them
