"Organic is the place to start the conversation, not end it when purchasing seeds," says Bill McDorman, President of Seeds Trust. We all want organic but Bill explains what we really need is small scale seed producers and regional seed swapping to preserve the genetic diversity we are so quickly losing. Since "certified organic" represents a small percentage of seed sales, asking exclusively for organic seeds prevents access to those seeds not certified. Uncertified seeds represent more than 98% of the world's diversity. Only purchasing organic seeds disregards small scale growers who have been doing the right thing all along but can't afford to participate in an organic program. It's complicated but Bill has some great solutions in this 2 minute video!
