Someone asked me what was going in this Vinnie groove from a 1985 drum clinic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-adDqW07Cw4&feature=related)

This video is my interpretation of what he's playing. It's a bit tricky - a real work out for your right foot. I explain the groove along with some suggestions regarding how to work on it (which I'll be implementing in my own practice).

Enjoy, and if you know where I can see the whole clinic please let me know!

Joe

  • Ö What kind of snare are you playing? thanks

  • @drummerjen That is a Yamaha steel 6.5 x 14. These days I'm using a Pearl Ian Paice signature snare which I love!

  • In fact, what is you kick pedal?

  • @jazzymansam It's a Demon Drive pedal. But it's the foot that's the most important part of the equation. Joe Morello's instructional video has a black and white clip of him playing a solo back in the 60s. He plays 16ths on the kick, heel down, at about 110bpm. Ridiculous!

  • @pfefftube Right, I will check that out. I've been having problems with my new direct drive yamaha pedal recently. Can't decide if it's wheteher I've changed from chain driven or whether it's my 16" kick drum, or the aquarian super kick head. I can't get the free flowing technique or rebound. Any advice/ideas what could be going wrong? Much appreciated, good luck with Wishbone Ash. I've been to see them a couple of times. They are my Dad's favourite band!

  • @jazzymansam I wouldn't just rush out and buy one. I like it a lot, but most people I've spoken to think it feels weird. Check out my bass drum technique video on my website (see video description for link) for some control ideas.

  • Im the original poster of the drum groove in question, and you've done a better job with it than anyone, so far. You're a real pro, thats for sure!

I like your approach to working out the combinations, its very Gary Chaffee-ish. Did you study with him? I did for a few years and it was literally life changing.

    Keep up the great work!

  • The Zappa track is Inca Roads (from One Size Fits All); Chester Thompson on drums.

  • Dude.. I LOVE YOU for all these Vinnie C transcriptions. These are freaking great. But, your videos are very dry. They're almost painfully boring to watch. May I suggest maybe splicing in some clips of some girls in bikinis, or maybe a car chase, or even an explosion. You know, something to really spice your videos up.

  • @pfefftube Thanks I like this Yamaha ^^

  • Great teaching and playing fella. Direct drive or chain driven kick pedal?
