I made a brief visit to Hamburg July 08 to visit the St. Pauli district of Hamburg frequented by the Beatles over three trips they made between 1960 and 1962.

The Beatles began playing in Hamburg at the Indra Club on 17 August 1960 whilst they slept crammed into a small room at the rear of the nearby Bambi Kino (cinema). They moved clubs to the Kaiserkeller in October 1960.

The Beatles returned to Hamburg in April 1961, performing at the Top Ten Club and returned to Hamburg again from 13 April to 31 May 1962, where they performed at the opening of The Star Club.

The Reeperbahn is a wide street in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, one of the two centres of Hamburg's nightlife and also the city's red-light district.

The Top Ten Club was located on the Reeperbahn whilst all the other clubs were located on Große Freiheit #7 a small side street tightly packed with clubs and bars. The Bambi Kino is located off Große Freiheit on Paul-Roosen Str. whilst John Lennon's famous Rock'n'Roll album cover doorway is nearby.

All locations are within a very short walking distance. Full details on how to locate these sites and many more can be obtained from

http://www.withthebeatles.de/

Beatle pictures to supplement those I took in Hamburg were located primarily on Flickr and whilst all are period pictures 1960 to 1962 not all may have been Hamburg although most are.

  • I am from Germany

  • You should be proud of Astrid Kirchherr, Klaus Voorman, and Jürgen Vollmer as they were a great early influence on the Beatles!

  • This is a great video, but I don't think the music is from a Hamburg concert. No recordings of the Beatles Hamburg concerts have ever turned out this good. I suspect this is another LIVE performance. Could you tell us where the Beatles are performing this particular rendition and what album you got it off of. It's a great version. Thanks so much for the upload. Regards Virgil Hilts

  • I made a trip to Hamburg and I wanted to show the pictures and I guess this was about my visit and pictures and I could have set to any song but I chose a song that Paul wrote in his family home in Forthlin Road home with Lennon when they were teens and they would likely have played this song in Hamburg. You are right about this not being a live version from Hamburg, I just wanted to show my Beatles Hamburg Journey.

  • Hi nzlennonfan ... Thanks for the reply. I hope you didn't take my initial message as a criticism. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, I was hoping that somewhere out there in the ozone someone has a really GOOD CLEAR recording of anything the Beatles did in Hamburg. If they do, I'd love to see/hear it on YouTube. I really would like to know where you got this particular rendition ... off of a bootleg album? Thanks so much for the upload and your efforts. Regards Hilts

  • Hey no worries. I was a complete novice then and this was my first video. I asked my daughter to download the song for me as I did not know how to. I still have it on the old computer and it is off Anthology 1 Disc 1. I only know that December 31st 1962 a small Grundig home tape recorder was used to record the Beatles performance and it was later released as an album on 2nd May 1977 'THE BEATLES Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962' Cheers
