Another thing is that when this motor is revved up, listen to the exhaust. It sounds like a gas engine when revved because of it being a 2-stroke. Because of the cylinders firing on every stroke of the piston, it sounds like it's running at close to 5000 RPM when its actually only turning around 2200+. These 2-stroke Detroits are called 'Screaming Jimmies' because of that.

that's the weight of a medium to large european car...

Have yours see the 2 strokes diesel from my only by valves and without springs? save more than 30% on consumption, with less noise. Check it.

So that's what the Americans capture the new oil.

@lrecollet - 2-stroke Detroit Diesels were offered in the old 359s... you may have to get an older trans due to bellhousings possibly being different, but it can be done.

@bunchofdicks Intercooler wouldn't do much good because you don't get airflow like you would on an engine that is in a car going down the highway.

That's the venerable old 318, a really hot machine back in the 70's, with the twin turbos it's probably more like 350 hp gross.
Them old 2 stroke Detroits where junk. You drove 100 miles .you thought you drove 1000. All that noise and shifting gears.Going up a mountain 20 miles per hour a row of cars behind you trying to pass.

@truckway1 Might be true, they didnt have the low end torque like the four strokes had and you had to keep them above 2100 to get usable power (you had to use the gearbox right, and all 14+ gears). But still, beeing a design from the late 30's that was unchanged for almost 60 years, and as popular it was(is), they (Detroit\GM) Had to do SOMEthing right...

Would this engine fit in a newer model 379 Pete, say for instance a 2006 379?

@lrecollet That I do not know. I know that it is possible to put a 6v53 in a large car (GMC), but it has to be modified a lot to fit. Dont take my word, but it wouldnt suprise me if it bolted right in. :)
