Britain and Ireland are only Schengen member countries never put down checkpoints cos they fear terrorists and drugs can enter into these countries plus immigrants from outside Europe.

It's difficult to grasp that all these borderpoints used to be set in no-mans land under heavy security

The most beautiful Schengen borders are those built after the Schengen agreement took effect between those countries. Because you don't notice ANYTHING, not even former customs buildings. You just have a normal road and drive on. Some communities don't even allow the blue country sign - because they want to preserve the image of one country - many states.

Its strange because it seems like Europe is moving FORWARDS in unifying with other counties. But here in the USA, we are moving BACKWARDS and de-unifying ourselves from the rest of the world. The United States could learn a thing or 2 from Europe but prolly never will
