The Royal Manor of Portland gave a hearty welcome to Her Majesty and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, on 11 June 2009.
They looked around the impressive new Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy at Osprey Quay, Portland - the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games sailing events. Beautiful sunshine, and cheered on by hundreds of flag-waving local school children. They chatted to past and aspiring Olympian sailors, at the " finest sailing waters in the world".
At the brand new Portland Marina, the royal couple then boarded a luxurious Sunseeker motor yacht and set sail across Portland Harbour for Weymouth. Appropriately - the famous Sunseeker -as featured in 4 James Bond movies - is actually built at here Portland, and at Poole, Dorset.
Exactly 65 years before, from this shore of Portland Harbour, and in grim contrast to this world-class leisure and recreational development, nearly 1/2 million Allied troops embarked for the D-Day landings in France,

  • Ouch! that would have cost Sunseeker about £900 an hour just in fuel to take that boat out, and im pretty sure it was a fly bridge range not a predator.

  • @DanPeek1 Cheaper than advert for national publicity! Yes it was a Sunseeker 34m yacht, not a Predator. I'm saving hard.

  • W00T i was there, i was on the portland pilot boat Culverwell escorting them out the harbour limits into weymouth.....she's just a damn tourist attraction no more, no less

  • It's not only what she is and does, it's what she represents.

    I s'pose you'd prefer G Brown as lifetime president!

  • @StuartMorris7 i know that presidents are ellected for a term, not life long birth rights like the royals. and yes i would prefer that!!

  • The organisers will be constructing walls to stop the ticketless trash watching our beloved sport which should be open to anyone ..Where is the freedom in our country these days to do as we please and go where we want ..I for one will tear down any obstacle that stops me looking out to sea !!!

  • I really love prince Phillip! When the sailor is folding the UJ, he cracks a joke "Noo you're folding it wrong, boy! That's paramount to treason isn't it, Lizzie!"

    Excuse my twisted imagination!

  • man she is tiny

  • @StuartMorris7 Very true, Im saving for a slighty smaller and affordable one :L

  • @robotracking North Korea needs you. Will you be working as hard for your country when you're her age?
