  • I have to agree. All of my experiences with MFJ have been favorable. I own a number of their products and am satisfied with all of them. I am even more impressed with Martin and his company. While other amateur radio manufacturers are whining and lobbying the FCC to improve their market, MFJ finds the need and fulfills it. Made in USA means something to me and I'm happy to direct my money to MFJ and companies like them. I've met Martin and he is truly a gentleman of ham radio.

  • john, im wanting to get a qrp radio,i have been watching ebay for a 20m or a 40m mfj. seem to run $100. or so, but i really want a FT817, but its no $100 bucks. and a buddi pole or the blue star ant. a camp rig or when we quad, take it with me system.

i won a new mfj 945e ant tuner at ham fest.so this seems to be a low budget way to go.

what would you say? and why? mike..

    Mike,

Good questions. The MFJ is built like a tank, simple and really puts out a punch but is limited to one band. The 817 will offer several bands but will have less power. So it depends on what you want most.

As for antenna, you can save a lot of money with a simple dipole. I use one often when camping. Finally if you really want to save money, go with CW. To me it’s the most fun of all!

    Thanks for watching my videos.

I ‘really’ like the little MFJ radios. They are built like a tank and have excellent reception and I usually get excellent signal reports.

However, the MFJ is 100% analog so tuning takes getting used too, but easy after a little practice.

While I have the 20 meter version (9420) with CW board, I think if I had to do it over, I’d take the 40 meter with the same set up because 40 meter is usually open at night.

  • I Agree -- I like MFJ Equipment -- I'm still using the MFJ Versa Tuner II 945 Tuner that I purchased in 1979!! --- I recently purchased their MFJ 9420 and am having a blast contacting DX running QRP and a Sloper Antenna.

    Thank MFJ!!!

  • Well done sir and a big thumbs up to MFJ as well!

  • Good commentary. I alays look forward to the Huntsville Hamfest where MFJ will always be present. I like their products too. AND like the fact, they are NOT too far from Huntsville AL. 73 AI4QT
