Libro Rojo de Montserrat, siglo XIV

We are hurrying towards death, let us desist from sin.

I have resolved to write about the contempt of the world,
so that this degenerate age will not pass in vain.
Now is the hour to rise from the evil sleep of death.

Life is short, and shortly it will end;
death arrives faster than anyone believes.
Death annihilates all and has mercy on no-one.

If you do not turn back and become pure as a child,
change your live by good deeds,
you will not enter the kingdom of God [as one of the] blessed.

When the horn sounds for the last day,
and the Judge appears and calls the chosen for ever
to his kingdom, the preordained to hell,

How happy will they be who will reign with Christ,
seeing him thus face to face
they will cry aloud together: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts.

And how miserable will they be who are destroyed forever,
they cannot free themselves and for that they will die.
Alas, alas for the wretched, they will never escape from there.

All earthly kings, all the mighty of this world,
all clerics and all the powerful, must change;
they must become like children, renouncing vainglory.

Alas, dearest brothers, it is fitting that we contemplate
the bitter sufferings of the Lord, and so weep
so that, he keeping us as the apple of an eye, we should not sin.

Nurturing Virgin of virgins, crowned in heaven,
be our advocate with your son,
and be our mediator after this exile.
