This is one of Henry Purcell's anthems, written for the funeral of Queen Mary II in 1695. It was performed in December last year in the church of the Holy Sepulchre, Warsaw, Poland at a concert in aid of the Halemba Tragedy, by the Fundacja Nowa Orkiestra Kameralna Choir ( http://www.fnok.pl ) and conducted by Richard Bylicki Berkeley.

  • Absolutely love this peice but can't say I agree with the tempo of this performance. Needs to be quicker, in my humble opinion.

  • Should all funeral compositions be set to dance beats, or just this particular one?

  • Oh wow, you uploaded this? How's it hangin', Huliganov.

  • Vertically, mainly, my friend.

  • Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts. . Shut not thy merciful ears unto our prayers; . But spare us, Lord most holy. . O God most mighty . O holy and most merciful Father . Thou most worthy Judge eternal . Suffer us not at our last hour . For any pains of death to fall from Thee. . Amen.

Ouch! Good comeback. I thought this performance was beautiful. It deserved to be recorded in a High Quality Digital format. I wish I could have seen it live.

  • I don't know what it is about this song, but i love it too much! It touches the deepest recesses of my soul! Its both deeply mournful but joyous at the same time. He was truely a soulful and talented composer.

  • I love this anthem, and this tempo is perfectly funerial, absolutely magnificent IMHO Spot On!

  • God is totally imaginary and there is no need for one in an enlightened populace.

Now stop being silly and pack it in :-)

  • You're just imagining that God is an imaginary entity. Music is also imaginary of course. Any animal devoid of imagination hears nothing but a random string of sounds. Considering that music is imaginary, they have made a reasonable job of making songs to praise a very real God!
