Want the scoop on Albuquerque's red light Camera program?

The City of Albuquerque has made over 14 Million dollars fining its citizens when it has done everything it possible can to jeopardize their safety to entrap its citizens into these fines. It has done everything it can to diminish road safety, increase the number of tickets and accidents through the manipulation of yellow light timing, manipulating slipstreams, and has resulted in an overall increase in the number of accidents at cameraed intersections by 20% since the programs started. (Source: Albuquerque Journal, June 2006, Middle Rio Grande Council of Governments, 2008)

If the city stands to gain money by having an inefficient traffic system, it will ultimately lead to frustrated drivers, vehicles wearing out faster, increased emissions, and yes, increased traffic accidents from vehicles attempting to stay in the slipstream.

Already, normally law abiding citizens are fighting back using reflective coatings and license plate covers on their cars. Some have even resorted to placing fake letters on the plate to obfuscate the plate numbers. Others still, have simply registered their cars under corporations or LLCs to make them impervious to the and makes the program a complete joke. Many cities that have experimented with the Cameras have found them to be a huge boost in revenue. More responsible cities have found they also increase accidents at intersections. Responsible cities and governments have stopped these programs. What makes Albuquerque think its program is any different?
The attitude of city government seems to be to ignore these issues. I suppose as long as the city is making money, it's ok to cause more traffic accidents than we are stopping, right? I think it's difficult to make someone understand something if their job performance and revenue depends on them not understanding it. Let's get our slipstreams in gear and make sure our citizens get the protection and due process they deserve. Impeach Chavez now!
Check out RedFlex.com for the company information on the Red light camera program. Isn't it amazing the first thing the website mentions is profitability and offers ZERO safety statistics?

  • Maybe not a highway, but rather a loop like other cities have. Something that would connect Coors with Tramway or Alameda. Slipstream is a farce on Albuquerque roads--there are still too many variables. You're right about Albuquerque traffic courts: they're set up against you. Even the cops are now pushing for a guilty verdict right on the spot without giving you a chance for rebuttal in court. It's all about the bling. You wouldn't believe how many have been caught by these things now.

  • I still think the lights on coors are intentionally designed to make you hit red on every one. I don't have a problem on 528 in Rio Rancho, but in Albuquerque I hit every light.

  • Coors needs to be entire rebuilt and turned into an actual highway without any stoplights...

  • Paseo Del Volcan is supposed to become the major highway linking the west side from I-40 to highway 550. We're about $500 million dollars behind federal highway funding at the moment, so nothing gets done. I think it's because we're too busy fighting and paying for an endless war overseas...

  • Hmmmm I have to check out that program. Is it free? LOL

  • No, it's about $3,000.

  • Try that slipstream shit in a semi truck. Get screwed at every light.

  • Gee, whadya know? I mean, whadya know? Whadya know? Whadya know? Whadya know?

  • @danran78

Sorry, I live in Albuquerque and I would flat out refuse to pay one of those tickets. They use civil law to try to get around due process of law. They cannot issue an arrest warrant nor can they revoke my license for refusal to pay. The city got busted shortening yellow lights in 2007. This is not about safety. One of our city councilors was talking about lost revenue after the state's department of transportation said thou shalt remove them from state and federal highways.

  • Slipstreams will almost never work properly while people are in control of their own vehicles. While you may have been driving the proper speed, others aren't. They drive too fast and get to the light too quickly and have to stop and wait and throw off the whole flow. Now everyone has to stop for these speeders to pick up speed again. We don't live in a perfect world. My point i guess is that there are more important issues to resolve. Just pay attention and the lights won't be a problem.

  • I am moving to albuquerque so I appreciate the heads up about the lights, but if you people know about the lights and are still getting tickets, then your the dumbasses. And fuck this slipstream you keep talking about. Just pay attention to the lights and stop when your supposed to. And to the dumbass who said they didn't take in to account that he was trying to make an amber. Wow. Your mad 'cause you got a ticket when you were speeding. You deserved a ticket. Amber doesnt mean speed up.

  • fuck these fuckin cameras i got a fuckin ticket fuck that fuckin shit!

  • i agree COMPLETELY! chavez is total dumb ass and probably kept have of the fines payed due to the red light cameras. me and a group of friends had bumper stickers made saying how we really feel about him so if you want any let me know.

  • ooooooooo Slipstream. What are you talking about a slipstream for?
