Hello, Dolly! is a 1969 American musical film, based on the Broadway production of the same name. The film follows the story of Dolly Levi (Barbra Streisand), a strong-willed matchmaker who travels to Yonkers, New York in an attempt to find a match for the miserly "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire," Horace Vandergelder. In doing so, she convinces his niece, her intended, and Horace's two clerks to travel to New York City.

Gene Kelly directed producer Ernest Lehman's screenplay. The cast included Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Danny Lockin, Tommy Tune, Fritz Feld, Marianne McAndrew, E. J. Peaker and Louis Armstrong, whose recording of the title tune was a #1 hit in the mid-1960s. It was photographed in 65 mm Todd-AO by Harry Stradling Sr.

Possibly the last great Hollywood musical has its flaws, but the soundtrack is not among them. Working under the musical direction of Lionel Newman and Lennie Hayton, the very large team of orchestrators included: film stalwarts Herbert W. Spencer, Alexander Courage; the original Broadway production arranger, Philip J. Lang, making a rare film outing; along with pop arrangers Don Costa and Frank Comstock. * "Call On Dolly" * "Just Leave Everything To Me" • * "Main Titles (Overture)" * "It Takes a Woman" * "It Takes a Woman (Reprise)" * "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" * "Ribbons Down My Back" * "Dancing" * "Before the Parade Passes By" * "Intermission" * "Elegance" * "Love Is Only Love" * "Hello, Dolly!" * "It Only Takes a Moment" * "So Long, Dearie" * "Finale" * "End Credits"

  • 0:51 :)

  • Gene Kelly!! :)

  • It's on retroplex right now :) I've seen this movie hundreds of times since I was a kid - when I saw it on the big screen. I may be a sap, but, it's very charming & never fails to make me smile. My favorite part is almost here: Louis Armstrong singing "Hello, Dolly." It gives me goosebumps. Yeah, it's an anachronism but, like I said, I'm a sap :)

  • @charisandmargot JUST 20 times?

    lol :P

  • I wonder why Joyce Ames didn't continue acting, the girl at 0:41. She's pretty hot even though she's a bit short but I've seen her in the film and it looked like she could have gone a long way, same for Danny Lockin but sadly he was murdered by some incompetent douche-bag.

  • So sad about Danny Lockin (being murdered) by some freak in CA. Stabbed 100 times at age 34.

  • Sad the Barnaby was murdered...Crazy. For those that don't know: he was stabbed 100 times in California...sounds like it was by Charles Hopkins/a guy he met at a bar. Yes, Danny Lockin was gay. So sad.

  • wonderful! thank you!

  • @Garbo1964 Yeah there was a huge controversy in the hiring of Ms. Streisand from what I have heard. But I guess she was also a perfectionist and came back to re sing/tape some of the songs she thought were lacking. I admire the whole cast for making this work. I so love this Musical

  • @charisandmargot Only 20 times? LIGHTWEIGHT! ;-)
