  • The Makara turbines won't spin if wind speed is less than 2.8 metres per second, if wind speed is over 25 mps it will shutdown automatically and angle its blade to minimise the wind resistance on it. In the distant it looks like they are spining slow, when you are right next to it, it spins very fast. A good gauge for a novice would be to watch the shadow of the blade move across the ground when the blade is turning.

  • the Late Professor Dawber from Otago University made this windfarm possible, as he mapped the best places in NZ support a windfarms..

  • oh yeah i think i saw that, that was in like a hurricane though i think so not everyday wind lol

  • They are connected through a gearbox to a generator, 2.5Mw in this case I think. I saw one once spinning in a storm so fast the blades bent and hit the support pole collapsing it. There is another video of one on youtube with black smoke pouring out of it,

  • because they are heavy, turning a larger turbine

  • Lol John, funny fellow. Always gets me how slow they turn, not like the old ones used on farms with lots of blades spinning madly around. Why do they so slow on what is a windy day.

  • you need to tweet your videos @johnkeypm
