This is the start of our Blackberry Project. The over all picture is to prep the soil, build the trellis, plant the Blackberries, build the pathway and mulch.

In this part, we had a large stump that needed to be removed to allow space for the trellis and planting. You want to remove stumps for disease and insect control. As well as they can not be used by the roots for food for over 10 years.

Eventually you would want to dig it out, but only damage or even kill your planting. Removal now is best. This stump was still alive, it would have eventually put up new shoots and competed for nutrients and water, slowly starving our plants, as it was much bigger then they.

  • Use a sawzall it's quick and painless then you can get to the planting

  • @MarshmallowVogt Yes, it would be nice to use one. But, as mentioned in some of the prior videos, we don't own one. This was more about making do with what we had on hand.

  • Good job! I know how you feel, we had a heck of a time tilling the soil up where I used to live in the coutnry.... Mountain area, soil mostly lava ash and sand, huge lava rocks under ground everywhere.... We used one of those morotized tillers, and everytime we heard a CLINK we had to stop and pull another 20-lb rock out with one of those huge pry bars, lol. Ugh... The ocasional tryy root too.
