Ive taken starters apart before- mostly to clean em- briggs are the easiest starters to work on.

i suppose my main issue is trying to use old ign switches/starter solenoids- should throw em all out n start new.

actually, today i just took this starter off and tore it all apart and noticed my brushes were all torn to shit. so i put some new brushes in. i don't reccomend doing it unless u have the know-how and the experience i have

i take that back... it wasn't the allis starter, it was my sears onan's starter. though older kohler starters and onan starters were both made by the same company, American-Bosch for the longest of time
