Luthien knew that the test was impossible,&tryed to escape.Her father feared to have lost her and built a dwelling from which she couldnt escape.Exactly in the holy forest of birch,up, between the branches of sacred trees, he built a wooden house, and Luthien was put there. But she could escape from her house.
Gifted with magic art, she grew her hair very long, in order to weave a black dress with it. The dress wrapped around her, like a shadow, as you just look her,you'll fall in a deep sleep.

This is in the Lord of the Rings -- Aragorn chants part of the tale to the Hobbits on the way to Rivendell... The Lay of Beren & Luthien.... The entire story can be found in the Silmarillion.
