Cop Rock was a short-lived series in the early Nineties, created by Steven Bochco who'd worked on Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and NYPD. The concept was shocking to many viewers, marrying a straight police drama with MTV-style music interludes. This may have been the only series to have been based on a Broadway musical format. Real singers and dancers worked in the cast and much of the sound was recorded live on set or location. Alas, the concept didn't go over and the series was soon ended, with only 11 episodes aired. The final scene of Episode 11 was notable in that it featured a musical number that was self-referential with the cast members acknowledging the network cancellation. Cop Rock had a chance for a second life when Channel VH-1 rebroadcast the series.
