Different strokes for different folks. If the Choir were in full voice or even if they were there then there would be a more personal aspect to this video, but never mind. This Cathedral was built around St Wilfrid's Church of 672 AD. St Wilfrid, educated at Lindisfarne, travelled to Rome in 652 and, on his return, became abbot of a Benedictine monastery here. He built a new church , the crypt of which is the oldest existing Saxon crypt in England, and forms part of today's Cathedral. A structural collapse in 1450 led to a massive rebuilding programme. Unfortunately the Reformation came along around 1539 and this impacted on the restoration. The rebuild was never completed to plan which meant the towers were much reduced in size. The double tomb against the wall is from 1497 and the Choir stalls are from 1494. It is thought that Lewis Caroll gained his inspiration for 'Alice In Wonderland' from the misericord seat which resembles a Griffon chasing a rabbit while another rabbit resides in its hole. Lewis Caroll's father was a Canon here from 1852 to 1868.

  • Thank you. More Cathedrals soon!

  • I am at present in India, having just been in Goa. In old Goa there happens to be the largest Church (Cathedral) in all of Asia. I recorded a video of this Cathedral (8 mins) and will be posting it when I get back which will be in late March. I have others too which include the Hare Krishna temple in Ahmedabad.

    HTdasa.

  • hello, saw your video. nice. what camera do you have - it looks good.

  • I use a Canon G10 which for me is the best of all worlds. Glad you liked the video.

  • Absolutely breathtaking, thanks for posting... I recently visited Downside abbey near Bath and was completely blown away... Those places are amazing, you really feel a presence of God when your in a place like that...

  • What I find most interesting is that God is everywhere and in all things but the devotional aspect of a church or cathedral brings His presence to our attention. I'm a Hare Krishna devotee and I just love any grand religious building. Thank you for your comments.

  • Now I am feeling homesick......I used to live in Ripon and even did a play in the cathedral.."All Roads" about the life of St Wilfrid!!

  • @karlosprabhu I love that Catherdral, been in there many times, probably the best time to go though is at New Years Eve, when there's a service at about 10pm I think it is.

Then there's always a torch light procession lead by the Ripon City Brass band, to the Town hall when the Hornblower blows the horn that stems back a few centuries ago (not exactly sure which century it is), but Wakeman was the first Mayor of Ripon, written above the town hall in Latin I believe.

  • I sang in this Cathedral as a visiting choir member both as a boy and an adult. Wonderful experience.

  • Great video, superb organ which I believe is about to be restored by Harrison & Harrison of Durham. Ripon is a truly magnificent Cathedral!

  • It is a very beautiful cathedral. I visited it in July 2009 when I was staying with friends in Northallerton. I shall certainly try to get back to Ripon again. Thanks for the video.

  • Hello HT dasa

    Thank you for replying.

I'll have a look at one of those - looks very good.
