  • I did a quick search and the percentage of underweight adults has actually dropped from 4% in 1962 to 1.8% today. So this apparent trend of increased extremes in both ends of the weight scale is probably just an illusion perpetuated by the media's obsession with thinness.

  • @jodharry I definitely acknowledge there being an unhealthy physical standard in the fashion industry today; my point is just that it effects such a small percentage of women that the issue doesn't deserve a fraction of the attention it gets. Even in Hollywood today, the majority of sex symbols and in demand actresses are curvy or at least of average weight. The number of underweight people in the Western world has not risen greatly and is still mostly comprised by the naturally thin.

  • @jodharry I don't think supermodels are the modern equivalent of pin-ups; quite the contrary. Pin-ups were marketed towards men and were therefore what women in the pages of men's magazines and porn films are today. High fashion models in the 40's, 50's, and 60's were still slimmer than the average woman, the difference being that femininity was still upheld as the ideal, whereas high fashion today favours a lot of masculine and androgynous traits.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx I think we've reached a common ground we both agree on! :) One last point: if one were to base a perception on what "supermodels" of the respective eras looked like, then they were undeniably larger in the 50's-60's; we're talking about so called "pin-ups". That this may have been a cultural preference at the time, is one matter, but the women gracing the genre of imagery associated with the glamour and modelling world of today are certainly slimmer than those of 50 years ago.

  • @jodharry But the premise that women's hips are bigger due to their being fatter IS the correct one, because fat on a woman's body goes primarily to that area, as well as the butt, breasts, and thighs. It would be impossible for the average woman to be fatter without also having bigger hips, especially considering the higher amount of growth hormones used in foods today.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx This is incorrect. I didn't speak for the masses, and their preferences; I spoke only of mine (and I certainly don't prefer fat!). What I did is define what my experience of observations is, in that many women are either obese, or conversely, all too skinny. I highlight again the humour in saying womens' hips are bigger today due to their being fatter. My questioning you was re: the premise on which you assert today's women have larger hips / breasts than they did 50 years ago.

  • @jodharry What do you mean by "real physiological de facto points"? The fact that women in the Western world are much fatter today absolutely means they have bigger hips than they did in the 60's. You seem to believe that because a small percentile of supermodels are underweight, that this body type is either common or preferred by the majority, and it is neither.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx I certainly don't profess to have seen every woman in the Western world, so bear with me in my "limited perspective". On the basis of this premise of personal experience of observation), I would strongly agree with you if you said they've bigger hips / breasts than 50 years ago... because they are undeniably FATTER today than they were then. Insofar as real physiological "de facto" points go, in a historical comparative reference, I question your position.

  • @jodharry Actually, the majority of women in the Western world have considerably bigger hips and breasts than they did 50 years ago.

  • @jodharry Women still have hips.
