Members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community explain how neither the state nor the mining company has acknowledged their rights to lands targeted by an international mining giant. http://online.nwf.org/sulfide_mining
Mining in general is what has made the UP a community. If you doubt it go to the mining history museum. It is what has put fed and clothed all of us living here for a over a hundred years. To not have that continue because we might have water damage or people can't go to "church" is crap! Bring on the mine, they have way more money than you do so accept the fact that it is coming.
Kennecott is from the UK, BP is from the UK - look at both of their environmental records. Look at one of the great environmental disasters of all time - the London Smog of 1952 that killed 12,000 in their capital - and they worked to cover it up! Get an American company to do this.
@rrpeters Sulfide whining?!? Oh you're SO creative lol! What lies? What have you actually studied so that you're an authority on the matter? Rio Tinto is a shady fucking company; when people who are publicly against the mining project end up beaten and left for dead in their cabins after meetings...YOU'RE SHADY! GO educate yourself about Indian pass/Glamis Gold Ltd., Rio Tinto..etc. Enjoy.
KBIC needs to put the EPA and DOI on notice that they either sit at the prosecutors table and stop Kennecott or they can continue to do nothing and join Rio Tinto at the defendant's table in a Federal court when these resources suffer the harm that Kennecott's mining operations will cause.
The trust responsibility to the Keweenaw Bay indian Community is a Federal trust responsibility. The State of Michigan has never assumed this responsibility. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Secretary of the Interior have a dual responsibility here to ensure that no one, including Rio Tinto / Kennecott unreasonably pollute or otherwise damage off reservation tribal trust resources.
kennecott is a british company. none of the profits will stay here if this bullshit operation is allowed to go ahead....would you trade the health of your community for 7 years of employment?

You see all of them beautiful tree's and wildlife?
That's gonna be GONE if they continue with this mining.
Yeah, a big 30 MILE RADIUS of dead trees, wildlife, and even watersupply to be exact..
So this isn't all "lies.."
As a proud member of the KBIC, I want this to stop as well.
It's just common sense.

Follow the money trail. You can bet someone's getting paid. I would guess it would be our public officals. It most certainly is not our Natives.
