Today (5-5-09) in Canandaigua, NY (a town approximately 20 miles southeast of Rochester), a school was placed under lockdown after a student committed suicide in the school's bathroom. This resulted in students not being allowed to use their cell phones so they could reach their parents, and having their cars impounded and searched by the police, supposedly in the name of the students' "safety and security," even though the authorities admit there was no immediate danger to the students. Students and their lockers were also individually searched for weapons.

This is a perfect example of how, in the post-9/11 world, minor incidents are exploited and used to train the public to be subservient to the emerging police state and view the authorities as their saviors while giving up their rights.

Suicide at Canandaigua Academy an "Isolated Incident"

May 5, 2009
WROC-TV

A 17-year-old senior at Canandaigua Academy committed suicide on school grounds Tuesday. He suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, in what police and school officials said was an isolated incident.

Parents were told about the incident through a reverse-call system, which told parents to not report to school grounds to pick up their children. The high schoolers were taken by bus to the middle school. A head count will be taken, and then they will be sent home.

School officials say that all the doors in the school are locked from the outside during the day, except for the front doors, where receptionists are posted. There are video cameras in the school which investigators will be looking at. There are no metal detectors.

Police are searching the school classroom-by-classroom. After that, cars in the parking lot will be searched as well. Once that is complete, students can pick them up.

The school superintendent, Don Raw, said that the student had "some issues" that were known to administrators and teachers.

Raw said that the behavior of all the students evacuated was admirable

  • I think we'll learn more about this as time goes by. Someone had told me that there may have been a 2nd kid in the bathroom with the gunman. If he was involved in the (foiled) plot, the cops would have wanted to search the lockers and vehicles.

Parents are rightly pissed about the cell phone confiscation. I personally believe the police chief over reacted, but I wasn't there and it wasn't my call either, so idk.

  • It's not even so much about overreaction as much as it is a standardized procedure that police across the country are following using 9/11 and Columbine as the excuse. However, I have never heard of them impounding and searching random cars, an extreme violation of the students' fourth amendment rights -- I don't care what the situation is. Yes, what happened was terrible, but that does not give the police the right to usurp people's constitutional rights and search cars without probable cause.

  • he had 30 rounds and 2 bombs ....yes it was bad dont make it seem blown out of proportion he was my friend and this is not easy

  • Yes, and my condolences go out to you and the rest of his friends and family. However, the way the media is covering this, even a day after it happened, is ridiculous! I am sure the family does not want their son blabbed about all over the news. I am talking about the media's coverage of the student's death -- not what is mentioned in this particular video. However, it all ties in with it because the media exploits and sensationalizes EVERYTHING!

I am sorry about your friend.

like i said before it is none of your business stop trying to overstep your boundaries and exactly what the other kid said he didnt just go in the bathroom and shoot himself

  • This was sad when it happened. I was in 8th grade. My brothers best friend was him. It truly was sad. R.I.P

  • To all the people commenting saying stupid stuff like they overreacted, just shut up!!!!!! I was in eighth grade at the time, and was scared to death that my sister (a highschooler) was shot. The way the handled it made me less worried then, and a he'll of a lot less worried about going to highschool. Still, have respect and don't criticize what happened!
